Kakitangan USM perlu kental hadapi cabaran

PULAU PINANG, 15 Dis.

USM earns RM1.5 million through R&D

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia has earned RM1.5 million from the commercialisation of its research and development, more than any other research university in the country.

Achievement in research is among the 20 criteria for Key Performance Indicators agreed on between USM and the Higher Education Ministry when the university was given Apex status two years ago, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the Peer Evaluation Team found that the university fulfilled all the KPIs agreed on.

Replying to Saifuddin Nasution (PKR-Machang), he said that USM, as a research university with Apex status, was allocated RM160 million for 2011, the bulk of which will be used for R&D.

Apex university status is a recognition given to local academic institutions identified as having the potential to be world class and which are given autonomy in administration, human resource, finance and student intake.

Under the programme, USM is expected to move up the world university rankings, to top 200 in five years and top 100, if not 50, by 2020.

#Hindsight2010: The Year’s Most Retweeted Tweets

In this edition of #Hindsight2010, we reveal the 10 Most Retweeted Tweets of the year.

American TV personality Stephen Colbert (@StephenAtHome)
tops the list with a wry Tweet about the Gulf Oil Spill, the year’s biggest Trend on Twitter. To commemorate the honor, Twitter is awarding Colbert --the titan of ‘Truthiness’-- the first-ever Golden Tweet award for the year’s Most Retweeted Tweet. Twitter co-founder Biz Stone personally presented Colbert with the award tonight on The Colbert Report.

Musicians dominated 2010's Most Retweeted Tweets list: Drizzy Drake (@drakkardnoir) took the #2 spot, and Lil Wayne (@liltunechi) came in at #3. Fascination with Justin Bieber (@justinbieber) is still raging: he placed fourth, while pop stars Joe Jonas (@joejonas) and Rihanna (@rihanna) made the list at #6 and #9 with their Bieber-related Tweets. Congrats also go to Lady Gaga (@ladygaga) (#7) and Kanye West (@kanyewest) (#8).

Humor is a key part of the Twitter experience, and the Most Retweeted list reflects the way that people use the service for comedy and parody. A Tweet from the spoof account @alqaeda clocked in at #5, and words of wisdom from @shitmydadsays rounded out the list at #10.

Finally, an honorable mention goes out to everyone’s favorite feline meme, Long Cat (@longcat111, @longcat222 and @longcat333). The three Tweets that made Long Cat extra loooooong added up to one of the Most Retweeted moments of the year. Meow.

Malaysian IPTA & IPTS website ranking according to Webometrics

Malaysian IPTA & IPTS website ranking according to Webometrics:
If you think the Alexa.com and bizinformation.org/my/ ranking of local IPTAs as published in this blog previously is superficial as it only gathers the number of hits (or popularity) of the websites, then this Webometrics ranking will give you a more balanced answer to whatever needs your curiosity might demand.

The Webometrics is an initiative of the Cybermetrics Lab, a research group belonging to the Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), the largest public research body in Spain. It is also called the Ranking Web of World Universities.

Since 2004, the Ranking Web is published twice a year (January and July), covering more than 20,000 Higher Education Institutions worldwide. Its intention is to motivate both institutions and scholars to have a web presence that reflect accurately their activities.

For more clarification regarding the motivations of the Ranking or the methodology, please read the FAQ.

As stated in its website, the original aim of the Ranking is to promote Web publication.

Therefore, if an institution's web performance is below the expected position (according to their academic excellence), university authorities should reconsider their web policy, promoting substantial increases of the volume and quality of their electronic publications.

Listed below is the 16 top ranking Malaysian IPTA and IPTS according to webometrics as gathered on 9 December 2010.
