USM earns RM1.5 million through R&D

KUALA LUMPUR, Dec 14 (Bernama) -- Universiti Sains Malaysia has earned RM1.5 million from the commercialisation of its research and development, more than any other research university in the country.

Achievement in research is among the 20 criteria for Key Performance Indicators agreed on between USM and the Higher Education Ministry when the university was given Apex status two years ago, the Dewan Rakyat was told today.

Deputy Minister Datuk Saifuddin Abdullah said the Peer Evaluation Team found that the university fulfilled all the KPIs agreed on.

Replying to Saifuddin Nasution (PKR-Machang), he said that USM, as a research university with Apex status, was allocated RM160 million for 2011, the bulk of which will be used for R&D.

Apex university status is a recognition given to local academic institutions identified as having the potential to be world class and which are given autonomy in administration, human resource, finance and student intake.

Under the programme, USM is expected to move up the world university rankings, to top 200 in five years and top 100, if not 50, by 2020.
