Google Friends Newsletter - June 2006
Reply by Chat
Since February, you've been able to "chat" using your Gmail account. And now, if you want to reply to an email message, but notice the sender is online and available, you can just "reply by chat." Best of all, these chat replies get grouped with the conversation just like email (after all, one of the best things about Gmail is how it groups a message and its replies into the same conversation so that you can always read your messages in context). To use this new feature, look for a link to "Reply by chat" at the bottom of any message sent by someone on your buddy list, right next to where you'd click to "Reply" or "Forward." The link will show up if the sender is online, and clicking on it will open a chat window where you can start chatting right away.

MISCELLANY
The book's the thing
In this all too frantic media-saturated world of ours, sometimes it's good to ponder the eternal truths. Many words about timeless matters belong to the one and only William Shakespeare. We celebrate his considerable body of work with a special Google Book Search site that includes all of his plays - comedy, tragedy, romance, history. From here you can also download Google Earth to visit the Bard of Avon's own Globe Theatre and other landmarks from his works and times. We are proud to support New York City's annual Shakespeare in the Park festival, and wanted to extend its reach across the Internet. Take time to savor the language you see on the screen!

Project Manager Leaves Suicide PowerPoint Presentation
PORTLAND, OR—Project manager Ron Butler left behind a 48-slide PowerPoint presentation explaining his tragic decision to commit suicide, coworkers reported Tuesday.Related post: news, suicide, sad, link, odd
"When I first heard that Ron had swallowed an entire bottle of sleeping pills, I was shocked," said Hector Benitez, Butler's friend and coworker at Williams Kennedy Marketing Consultants. "But after the team went through Ron's final PowerPoint presentation, I had a solid working knowledge of the pain he was feeling, his attempts to cope, and the reasons for his ultimate decision."
"I just wish he would've shot me an e-mail asking for help," Benitez added.
Butler broke his presentation into four categories: Assessment Of Current Situation, Apologies & Farewells, Will & Funeral Arrangements, and Final Thoughts.
According to Williams Kennedy president Bradford Williams, finalgoodbye.ppt was "clear, concise, and persuasive."
"After everyone left the room, I sat down and went through Ron's final presentation in slide-sorter view," Williams said. "Man, I gotta tell you, it blew me away. That presentation really utilized the full multimedia capabilities of Microsoft's PowerPoint application."
"We're really gonna miss Ron around here," Williams added.
In the presentation's first section, a three-dimensional bar graph illustrated the growth of Butler's sorrow during the two years since his wife and only child died in a car accident.
"We all got Ron's message loud and clear when that JPEG of his wife wipe-transitioned to a photo of her tombstone," coworker Anne Thibideux said.

World Cup 2006 Spoiler
*Brazil won the world cup in 1994. Before that, he had won this title for the last time in 1970. *
*If you add up: 1970 + 1994 = 3964 *
*Argentina won the world cup for the last time in 1986. Before that only in 1978. *
*And 1978 + 1986 = 3964 *
*Germany, though, won the world cup in 1990. Before that, Germany won in 1974. *
*Look: 1990 + 1974 = 3964 *
*This could lead us to guess the winner of the World Cup in 2002, since it should be the winner of the 1962 World Cup (In fact 3964 - 2002 = 1962). *
*And Brazil won the world cup in 1962! (And, in fact, Brazil won the 2002 WC) *
*This numerology seems to work... *
*And now, who would be the winner of the 2006 world cup? *
*Let's see, 3964 - 2006 = 1958 *
*And who won in 1958?.... *

*Oh, Brazil did!!!*

How to sleep
BY JAMES B MAAS
Treating sleep as a necessity rather than a luxury is the secret to being a peak performer. When you don't get proper sleep, you experience increased stress, feelings of lethargy, weight gain, reduced immunity and lowered productivity and memory. How do you know if you are getting proper sleep? Answer the following questions:
- Do I need an alarm clock to wake up at the right time?
- Do I often fall asleep in meetings, after heavy meals or when watching TV?
- Do I often sleep extra hours on weekend mornings?
- Do I feel tired during the day?
THE GOLDEN RULES OF SLEEP
1. Get proper sleep
Identify the amount of sleep you need to be fully alert all day and get that amount every night. For most adults, it's eight hours. For teenagers, it's nine.
2. Establish a regular sleep schedule
Go to bed at the same time every night, and wake up at the same time every morning - including weekends.
3. Get continuous sleep
For sleep to be rejuvenating, you should get your required amount of sleep in one continuous block. Any nicotine or caffeine after 2pm or alcohol within three hours of bedtime will disrupt your sleep.
4. Make up for lost sleep
For every two hours awake, you add one hour of debt to your sleep debt account. It takes eight hours of sleep to restore 16 hours of waking activity. You cannot make up for large sleep losses during the week by sleeping in at the weekend. Try taking a 20-minute power nap at midday.
SLEEP STRATEGIES
1. Keep your bedroom quiet, dark and cool
Sleep on a mattress with individual pocketed coils that reduce motion transfer, or a foam mattress designed to support your back properly.
2. Reduce stress
Even if you are sleep-deprived, anxiety can delay sleep onset. Try relaxation exercises. Write down your concerns before you go to bed - your worries then won't interfere with your sleep. Don't watch TV within two hours of bedtime. Take a warm bath before bed. Reading for pleasure before turning off the lights will ease you into sleep.
James B Maas, PhD, is a Stephen H Weiss Presidential Fellow, Professor and past Chairman of Psychology at Cornell University. He is the recipient of the American Psychological Association's Outstanding Educator Award and the author of Power Sleep.

Helicopter escape from Greek prison
The Greek police are hunting for two criminals who managed to escape from the country's largest maximum security prison in a helicopter. It's thought the escape was organised by one of the country's most wanted men. This report from Richard Galpin:Related post: news, prison, break, escape, crime
This was one of the most daring prison breakouts to take place in Greece. The helicopter landed in a courtyard of Korydallos prison in Athens as those on board threw flares into the area. Amid the confusion, two inmates managed to climb into the helicopter which took off again, flying to a nearby cemetery. The escaped prisoners then fled with their accomplices on motorbikes which have since been found near the port of Piraes.
One of the men, Vassilis Paleokostas, was serving a twenty-five year sentence for kidnapping and bank robbery. It's thought his brother, who's been on the run since 1990, was behind the breakout. The police have arrested the helicopter pilot, who says he was forced to fly to the prison at gunpoint.
Korydallos holds some of the country's most notorious criminals, including the leaders of the militant left-wing organisation, November Seventeenth, who were found guilty of murdering politicians, businessmen and foreign diplomats.

Makanan, Halal & Belas Makanan
