The Al Aqsa Intifada, a wave of violence and political conflict, began after Ariel Sharon, then Israeli opposition leader, traveled to the Temple Mount in East Jerusalem and proclaimed the land to be forever the property of Israel. While Palestinians maintain that the Intifada was a result of Sharon's visit, Israelis claim the uprising started with two political assassinations the day before.
