After a five- year struggle against the Soviet-backed Afghan government, the Taliban religious sect captured the city of Kabul. After the fall of the Afghan capital, rival revolutionary leader Burhanuddin Rabbani fled the city. The Taliban would remain in power and establish a Wahabi-based fundamentalist Islamic state until their overthrow by U.S.-backed forces loyal to Rabbani in late 2001. ~
