The Battle of Mogadishu begins (1993)

The Battle of Mogadishu was a failed attempt by the U.S. military to arrest members of Somali warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid's guerilla organization, which controlled the nation during a civil war in the early 1990s. As part of a U.N. relief effort, U.S.-led forces were sent to East Africa to provide aid for starving civilians, but Aidid's forces began disrupting the effort. The battle resulted in the deaths of 18 U.S. servicemen and about 2,000 Somalis. The U.S. pulled out shortly thereafter.
