How to Drink More Water Everyday

There are a variety of reasons to drink plenty of water each day. Adequate water intake prevents dehydration, cleans out the body, and promotes healing processes. Substituting water for beverages high in calories can also help control weight. Follow the steps below to make sure you're getting enough of this most basic necessity.

Steps

  1. Determine how much water you need. You've probably heard the "8 X 8" rule--drink eight 8-ounce glasses of water per day--but the amount of water a person needs varies depending on his or her weight and activity level. A better way to determine your recommended water intake is to divide your weight (in pounds) by two. The resulting number is the number of ounces of water you need each day. For example, if you weigh 150 lbs., strive to drink 75 ounces of water daily.
  2. Measure your daily intake of water. Do this for a few days. If you find that you're drinking less than the recommended quantity, try some of the following tips.
  3. Make it a habit to drink a sip of water between every bite while you're eating, but make sure this doesn't upset your stomach. If it does, reduce your fluid intake during meals to a level that you're physically comfortable with.
  4. Carry water with you everywhere you go in a bottle or other container. Before long, you'll find yourself reaching for it without a second thought.
  5. Keep a glass or cup of water next to you whenever you'll be sitting down for a long time, such as when you're at your desk at work. Drink from it regularly as you're working.
  6. Try wearing a digital watch that beeps at the beginning of each hour. Use that as a reminder to pour yourself a glass of water. Vow to drink that water before the next beep. If you drink only one small (6 ounce) cup per hour, you'll have consumed 48 ounces by the end of an 8-hour workday.
  7. Get a water purification system. Purified water tastes very good and may help make drinking water more appealing to you. Be aware, though, that as you grow accustomed to purified water, you may find that tap water leaves a bad taste in your mouth.
Tips

  • Except in very rare cases, it is not necessary to buy expensive bottled water. Companies that sell water have a financial interest in convincing you that tap water is undesirable. However, if you choose to drink tap water, please be aware of the pollutants and additional chemicals that exist in many tap water sources. Some studies have linked the long-term accumulation of these chemicals in your body to chronic health problems. A simple water filtration system or boiling of the water will help reduce these risks.
  • Instead of that Coke, try a glass of water. It may not be as tasty, but it's a lot better for you than drinking almost ten teaspoons of white sugar. It's also considerably cheaper, especially if you drink tap water.
  • If you really can't stand the taste of your water, try adding a tiny bit of fruit juice or a squeeze of lemon or lime--just enough to slightly change the taste. Refrigerating your water may also help make it more palatable.
  • For a feeling of accomplishment, fill two 32-ounce water bottles in the morning and make sure you have consumed the contents of both by the end of the day.
  • The body needs to burn calories to maintain itself at its critical operating temperature of 98.6 degrees. If you drink eight to ten glasses of ice-cold water everyday, the body will burn excess calories in order to raise the temperature to 98.6! If you drink eight glasses--64 ounces.--of ice-cold water every day, your body will have to burn about 70 calories per day to warm that water to body temperature. To lose 1 pound, you need to burn around 3,500 calories.
  • Drinking a full glass of water first thing in the morning helps wake the body up and gives it energy. So kick-start your day with water!
  • Water helps you look good. By flushing out toxins and impurities, water can make your skin clearer, smoother and younger looking.
  • Drinking water helps you control hunger. Drink a large glass of ice water just before meals. The cold causes your stomach to shrink somewhat, which will make you feel full more rapidly.
  • Whether drinking tap or bottled water, do some research on the source. In some places, such as Philadelphia, the tap water actually contains the same electrolytes that are in Gatorade. On the other hand it's also possible that your bottled water may be from a different source than its name suggests. If the bottle says 'Municipal Water Supply' or something to that effect, then the company has simply bottled tap water, and you're probably wasting your money.
  • If you find out you have lead plumbing, and water is abundant in your area, let the water run for about thirty seconds before filling your glass. This can reduce the amount of lead--and the bad taste that accompanies it--in the water you drink. If you live in an area with a shortage of water, however, this is probably not a good option.
  • To convert the units of measurement in this article to metric units, search for "metric converter" on your favorite search engine.
  • Some people believe that you should drink water only 20 minutes before a meal, not during or immediately after eating. The theory is that your digestive juices need to remain undiluted in order to properly break down your food for proper nutrient uptake.

Warnings

  • Increasing your water intake may cause you to have to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. To avoid this, you may want to stop drinking water a few hours before bedtime.
  • While adequate water is essential to health, it is possible to drink too much water or any other beverage, and there has been considerable scientific debate surrounding how much water a person really needs per day.
  • People with some heart conditions or swelling of the lower legs (edema) need to avoid excess water. If you have a history of kidney problems, especially if you have had a transplant, consult your doctor before increasing your fluid intakes.
  • You shouldn't drink too much water while eating as it waters down your stomach acid and can cause digestion problems.

Things You'll Need

  • Water
  • Bottle (Optional)
  • Money (If you buy bottled water)

NG News - Eclipse Photographed by Space Station Crew

March 29, 2006—Thousands of people flocked to sites between North Africa and central Asia in search of the best place on Earth to see today's total eclipse of the sun. But the coolest view might not have been on Earth at all.

Members of the Expedition 12 crew aboard the International Space Station were treated to this one-of-a-kind sight early this morning: a view of the moon's shadow passing across the Earth.

The island of Cyprus in the Mediterranean Sea (see map) appears in the top center of the photo, flanked on the left by the coast of Turkey.

Down on Earth, people in the center of the shadow, or umbra, experienced deep, nightlike darkness, while those in the shadow's lighter portion, or penumbra, witnessed a partial eclipse.

Space station crew members took the picture at 4:30 a.m. EST while orbiting 230 miles (370 kilometers) above the Earth. ~source.

Prison officials ban peanut butter to stop contraband

Prison officials ban peanut butter to stop contraband:
Tennessee prison officials have banned peanut butter in their facilities because inmates were hiding guns, drugs and cell phones in the 18-ounce jars.

The ban came after an investigation revealed that George Hyatt, a prisoner in Knoxville, smuggled a cell phone into the prison facility where he was being held and used it to coordinate a deadly breakout while being transported to court last August.

“After today, any/all such containers shall be considered contraband and will result in disciplinary action,” George Little, Commissioner of the Tennessee Department of Correction said in a statement.

Confiscation of the peanut butter jars followed the discovery of guns and drugs hidden in the jars. Inmates bought the sandwich spread from prison commissaries.

Prison officials plan to return the 4,600 18-oz. jars the department has on hand to the vendor and replace them with one-ounce condiment packets.

Customer Service Reader: The employee experience

Customer Service Reader: The employee experience:
In most companies, employees do not care about their jobs. A Gallup survey found that only 25% of employees are “actively engaged”. 75% are just muddling through. University of Michigan’s David Ulrich observes that “job depression” is on the rise.

* Disengaged and depressed employees are not likely to deliver a great experience to customers.
* To turn that around, you must engage the heart and soul of every employee. Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi at the University of Chicago found that employees want to experience work as “flow” – when they become so involved in what they’re doing that they lose track of time. Flow is about optimal experiences and enjoyment in life, and the ultimate goal is “turning all life into a unified flow experience”. When that happens, work does not feel like work, and the separation of work and leisure becomes meaningless. Work and leisure become one.

You can make that happen by treating employees as customers, and applying the principles of Customer Experience Management.

1. Find out what they want, learn about their experiential world.
2. Ask them what they would change.
3. Instead of imposing a regime, let them help develop their new work environment.
4. Get them really involved in the brand. Run workshops and discuss what it means to them. Let them suggest how they can live the brand in their work and in their personal lives.
5. Examine the employee interface. How can you improve contacts and interactions?
6. Seek their input about innovation, include them in developing innovations.

If you pay attention to your employees experiences, you will be rewarded with a happier, more productive, more proactive workforce. Utopia? Yes, sadly many companies today still operate according to a command-and-control system. Strategy is developed at the top and disseminated to the front lines in an environment of fear. This experience-destroying, military model of the organization fails to recognize the innovative and value-creating forces that a positive employee experience can unleash.

Drinking Water to Lose Weight

Weight Loss Success Stories: Drinking Water to Lose Weight:
What if someone told you you could lose weight with no effort on your part? What if there was a secret to losing weight that didn't involve increased exercise or decreased calorie consumption? And what if this secret method was free and easily available to you? Would you jump at the chance to do it?

The secret to some fast weight loss without exercise or diet changes is to drink more water!

Here's where I know there must be some kind of self-sabotage involved in my battle to lose the last ten pounds. I know I should be drinking more water, and it is the easiest thing in the world to do. It doesn't involve willpower, it doesn't involve dragging myself out to exercise, and it doesn't involve cutting back on calories. So why aren't I doing it?

It's not just me. Most North Americans are dehydrated. In fact, chronic dehydration is probably the most common cause of a lot of our health ailments. There are two main reasons so many people are dehydrated these days. We eat less vegetables and fruits (which are water-dense) and more processed foods than we should. And we drink lots of caffeinated beverages instead of water. Caffeinated beverages and alcohol are diuretics. They force more water out of our bodies.
If a person is dehydrated their body compensates by retaining excess water as a protective measure. This alone is responsible for a lot of excess weight. As well, a dehydrated person's metabolism is significantly lower than a normally hydrated person.

Dehydration is responsible for many people's feelings of fatigue. Many people have lost their sense of thirst and mistake it for hunger. Drinking a glass of water will usually greatly reduce any false hunger pangs.

So the solution to losing at least a few extra pounds sounds easy. Start with two glasses of room temperature water first thing in the morning. That's before you drink coffee or eat your breakfast. Try to drink some water regularly during the day. And eat more water dense foods such as vegetables, fruits and even legumes.

I'll get right on it. And I'd be keen to hear any feedback from people who've recently tried this for losing weight.

Mesothelioma

Normal human lung

Human lung showing damge caused by heavy exposure to asbestos

Mesothelioma due to asbestos exposure

Mesothelioma is an uncommon form of cancer, usually associated with previous exposure to asbestos. In this disease, malignant (cancerous) cells develop in the mesothelium, a protective lining that covers most of the body's internal organs. Its most common site is the pleura (outer lining of the lungs and chest cavity), but it may also occur in the peritoneum (the lining of the abdominal cavity) or the pericardium (a sac that surrounds the heart).

Most people who develop mesothelioma have worked on jobs where they inhaled asbestos particles, or have been exposed to asbestos dust and fibre in other ways, such as by washing the clothes of a family member who worked with asbestos, or by home renovation using asbestos cement products. ~source

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet (Bab 3)

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet (Bab 3):

Two-Headed Turtle Found in China

March 17, 2006—In biology, two heads are rarely better than one. But this unusual golden coin turtle, found in China, appears to be doing just fine. A businessman from the city of Qingdao says he bought the reptile at an animal market last year.

According to press reports released Wednesday, the turtle's two heads cooperate well and can even eat at the same time. Its owner says the reptile eats more than one-headed turtles do and has grown over the past year.

The creature most likely developed its unusual anatomy while still in the egg. Its embryo began to split in two—the process that gives rise to identical twins—but then failed to fully separate.

While uncommon, abnormalities caused by incompletely split embryos occur in many animal species, including fish, snakes, rats, cows—even humans, where the phenomenon leads to what are known as Siamese, or conjoined, twins.

Experts say survival rates for two-headed animals tend to be lower in the wild. But in captivity such animals can prosper. At the San Diego Zoo a two-headed corn snake named Thelma and Louise produced 15 normal offspring before it died.

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet (Bab 2)

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet (Bab 2):

Tersedar dari alam kestrebenan Malim apabila suara keras budak penjaga kolam 1 sedang membebel menegur budak penjaga kolam 2 kerana kegemarannya memelihara burung.

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet

Malim Pelita As-Serabuuti - Al Kisah Sidang Para Monyet:
Assalamualaikumwarrohmatullahiwabarokatuh.

Utusan Malaysia Online - Hiburan:

Menurut Yazit, sebelum pelajar-pelajar diajar memukul dram, mereka diajar bagaimana memegang kayu dram.

Pelajar-pelajar panggil aku cikgu.

Bayangkan betapa mewahnya.

Also coming up is a flashback episode that will "provide a chance for us to add some much-needed meat to the bones of these characters, and answer the question of why my character sacrificed everything to save his brother."

Next season, he adds, he and Dominic Purcell will be "trying to unravel the conspiracy that led to his getting arrested, while the show is following the various characters pursuing their common and different agendas."

Jaring, Time dotCom to merge?

Jaring, Time dotCom to merge?:
PETALING JAYA: Will the once hotly-debated merger between Jaring and Time dotCom Bhd become a reality now that the latter has been given a new lease of life with a 3G spectrum?

Sources said the merger would be announced soon and, amid the sketchy details, it would entail Jaring buying over Time dotCom assets for about RM500mil to create another broadband giant.

Time dotCom has an extensive fibre optic network in the country, plus submarine cables that are virtually under-utilised. Jaring is the second largest Internet service provider in Malaysia that is now offering wireless broadband service known as Flite.

The rationale for the 3G spectrum award to Time dotCom is still being questioned by many industry experts but, now that a merger is on the cards, perhaps that was the reason why Time dotCom was named as one of the two winners of the 3G spectrum last week.

“There are synergies in the merger. Jaring gets a strong and wide fibre optic backbone network for its services and, with the 3G spectrum, its reach can be wider. One thing is for sure, a merger of Jaring/Time dotCom would create a stronger entity and, hopefully, would intensify competition in the marketplace,” the source said.

“We need another strong player in the broadband scene to give TM Net a run too.’’ TM Net is the largest player in the broadband market in Malaysia.

Update1:
KUALA LUMPUR (Dow Jones)--TIME dotCom Bhd. (5031.KU) confirmed Wednesday that it is in talks with Jaring Communications, but said it hadn't been informed of whether the state-owned internet service provider wants to buy TIME's assets.

"We are currently still in discussions. ... At this juncture, there are no significant developments or conclusions that warrant an announcement. We are, however, unaware of Jaring's intention to buy over TIME dotCom assets," the company said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia.

TIME dotCom was responding to media reports that Jaring, an internet services provider owned by state investment arm Khazanah Nasional, may buy its nationwide fiber-optic network and other assets for MYR500 million, and that a deal could be announced soon.

TIME didn't provide details of the talks with Jaring.

Money-losing TIME was one of two surprise winners of a third-generation wireless services license last week, beating out DiGi.Com Bhd. (6947.KU), the country's smallest but fastest growing mobile-phone company.

The government asked TIME and unlisted MiTV Corp. to promote mobile virtual network services as a condition for selling each firm a 3G license for MYR55 million apiece.

TIME, which has a market capitalization of MYR1.46 billion, reported a loss of MYR239 million for the year ended Dec. 31. ~source
Update2:
Latest: 'Time dotCom in talks with Mimos to buy Jaring'

TIME dotCom Bhd is said to have initiated high-level talks with Mimos Bhd with a view to acquiring Jaring, Malaysia's oldest Internet service provider (ISP).

"There are synergies between the companies and a merger is definitely in the cards, but neither Time dotCom or Jaring will be setting the terms of the merger," a government source said.

He said that as the Finance Ministry has sole control over Jaring via Mimos, while various government-linked funds own a controlling stake in Time dotCom, the Ministry will eventually set the terms of the merger.

Time dotCom has an extensive fibre optic network, while Jaring is the country's second largest ISP.

In its filing to Bursa Malaysia, Time dotCom admitted that it was in negotiations with Mimos and Jaring but added that "at this juncture, there are no significant developments or conclusions that warrant an announcement".

Time dotCom went on to add that it was unaware of Jaring's intention to buy over its assets.

"If the companies do eventually merge, it will be Time dotCom that will be buying over the assets of Jaring and not the other way around," a source said.

He said while there is widespread speculation that Time dotCom needs to incorporate Jaring in its 3G plans, this will not be the case.

In a letter dated March 6 2006, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) confirmed the award of the IMT-2000 spectrum assignment to Time dotCom.

In the same letter, the regulator said the final award of the 3G spectrum is conditional on the submission of a detailed business plan to MCMC within six months from the date of announcement and payment of a spectrum assignment fee of RM50 million.

As Time dotCom will have to work on the 3G proposal immediately, it will not have time to incorporate Jaring in its 3G rollout plans, and so Time dotCom's 3G spectrum rights have nothing to do with the merger talks. ~source
Update
PETALING JAYA: Time dotCom Bhd and Jaring Communications Sdn Bhd said they are still locked in discussions over a proposed merger that could change the future of both companies.

Time dotCom, in a statement to Bursa Malaysia yesterday, said: “We are currently still in discussions with Mimos and Jaring.’’ The Ministry of Finance Inc owns Mimos, which in turn controls Jaring, the operator of the Jaring Internet service.

A Jaring spokesperson said: “Talks are still ongoing.’’ He did not elaborate.

Separately, Time dotCom said in a statement: “At this juncture, there is no significant development or conclusion that warrants an announcement. We are also unaware of Jaring’s intention to buy over Time dotCom assets.

“We will make the relevant and necessary announcements at the appropriate time.’’

Jaring chief executive officer Dr Mohamed Awang Lah, in an e-mail response to queries from StarBiz, said: “As an organisation, our emphasis is on deploying Jaring wireless broadband solutions and bundling them with services like MY015, which is an Internet telephony call service. This ensures that we are purely focused on building a complete value chain.

“Our challenge currently is to resolve the interconnect (with cellular operators) and last mile issues which essentially hinder our ability to field more meaningful services to our customers.

“But, any initiative that would enhance our ability to specifically achieve this and – in general – improve our services in the marketplace, is viewed positively by Jaring.’’

Talk of a merger between Jaring and Time dotCom has been circulating for more than a year but it seemed to head nowhere even though industry experts think Jaring may buy Time dotCom assets for RM500mil.

It is learnt that Jaring and Time dotCom were told to look at the possibility of a merger by the “powers that be’’ over three months ago, yet there seems to be no conclusion to the discussions. What is delaying this merger when both companies have conducted internal due diligences at least twice?

Various reasons were cited by sources familiar with the talks, from “lack of co-operation to lack of information being supplied.’’

This is also the fifth time that Jaring has been courted. Years ago, Telekom Malaysia Bhd courted Jaring for a possible merger with its TM Net, but the move fizzled out.

AtlasOne and even Singapore Telecommunications also came along but nothing materialised. This is Time dotCom’s second go at Jaring.

The question is what value would be created with the merger?

“It is nice to merge and create a bigger entity but there are more doubts than answers in this merger. Yes, 3G is good and Jaring’s Internet service provider is a valid business but there is unfulfilled potential,'' an industry expert said.

“The cost of investment is also going to be huge and what track record is there for these companies to become a player like TM Net in broadband services?’’ the expert asked.

Time dotCom was named one of the two winners of the 3G spectrum recently. ~source

Techworld.com - Cisco dials SIP in VoIP U-turn

Cisco has announced the Cisco Unified Communications system, a major communications suite that will have at its heart the SIP Voice-over-IP protocol.

The software builds on Cisco's current lineup offered under the IP Communications banner, namely its CallManager, Unity, MeetingPlace and IP Contact Center products, and adds three major new software products as well as new features.

Able to reach the right person on the first try on no matter what device they are using through "presence" technology, the new suite of applications includes voice, e-mail, text, collaboration and videoconferencing products under a single wrapper.

The software is set to be announced at the VoiceCon conference in Florida, and marks the company as shifting from selling individual servers and applications for IP-based communications, to focusing on the system as a whole, including technical support services.

It will offer per-seat licensing and market those systems to business decision-makers based on business benefits such as productivity, said Vickie McGovern, director of marketing for IP Communications at Cisco. ~ full articles

Battle of Badr

The Battle of Badr was a key battle in the early days of Islam and a turning point in Muhammad's war against his Quraish opponents in Mecca.

The battle has been passed down in Islamic history as a decisive victory ascribed to either divine intervention or the genius of Muhammad.

Although it is one of the few battles mentioned by name in the Muslim holy book, the Qur'an, virtually all contemporary knowledge of the battle at Badr comes from traditional Islamic accounts, both hadiths and biographies of Muhammad, written down decades after the battle.

Prior to the battle, the Muslims and Meccans had fought several smaller skirmishes in late 623 and early 624, as the Muslim ghazawāt plundering raids grew increasingly commonplace, but this was their first large-scale battle.

Muhammad was leading a raiding party against a caravan when he was surprised by a much larger Quraishi army.

Advancing to a strong defensive position, Muhammad's well-disciplined men managed to shatter the Meccan lines, killing several important leaders including Muhammad's chief opponent, Amr ibn Hishām.

For the early Muslims, the battle was extremely significant because it was the first sign that they might eventually overcome their enemies in Mecca, one of the richest and most powerful pagan cities in pre-Islamic Arabia.
