Gmail Priority Inbox

Priority Inbox helps you get through your email faster by putting important messages at the top of your inbox. Gmail uses a variety of signals to automatically identify what's important, including which messages you open and which you reply to. Incoming messages get separated into three customizable sections: "Important and unread," "Starred," and "Everything else." To try it out, click the Settings link in the upper right-hand corner of your Gmail account and visit the Priority Inbox tab.

Google Instant

Google Instant is a new search enhancement that shows results as you type. Now, you get to the right content much faster—you don't have to finish typing your full search term or even press "Search." Use the results from what you've already typed as feedback to help you formulate a better search term, and adapt your search on the fly until the results match exactly what you want.

Google Health updates

We've redesigned Google Health to make it easier for you to act on and understand your personal health information. A new easier-to-use dashboard brings together even more of your health and wellness information, and a new wellness features lets you set personal health and wellness goals for yourself and track your progress online. You can set customized trackers, like how much exercise you get a week or how much coffee you drink a day, and keep a journal on your progress. And if you select a wellness goal, condition, medication or topic you're tracking, you'll get relevant and customized news and information from Google search results and other trusted content.

Seven continents of Street View

We've added Street View imagery of Antarctica, Brazil and Ireland, so you can now explore all seven continents with Street View. See the famous beaches of Brazil, the rolling landscapes of Ireland, the icy terrain of Antarctica and other spots around the world from a street- level perspective. You may even spot some penguins!

Arcade Fire

"The Wilderness Downtown" is a musical experience made specifically for the browser, created by writer/director Chris Milk with the band Arcade Fire and Google. It's personalized to you, so it takes you down memory lane through the streets you grew up in, set to Arcade Fire's song "We Used to Wait." It was built with Google Chrome in mind and features the latest web technologies including HTML5, Google Maps, an integrated drawing tool and multiple browser windows that move around the screen.

Introducing Google Sidewiki

We're excited about the release last week of Google Sidewiki, a new way for you and others to contribute helpful information alongside any page on the web. Google Sidewiki is a sidebar in Google Toolbar where you can add text entries, links, and embedded videos. To make sure you see the most relevant entries on top, we use an algorithm to rank entries by quality. It takes into account your feedback as well as many other signals. We also have the first version of our API available to let anyone work freely with the content that's created in Google Sidewiki. Google Sidewiki is a feature of Google Toolbar for Firefox and Internet Explorer — support for Chrome is coming.

Google Fast Flip

Google Fast Flip, recently launched in Google Labs, is a way to read news that combines the best elements of print and online articles. Like a print magazine, Fast Flip lets you browse through recent news, headlines and popular topics, as well as feeds from individual top publishers. At the same time, we offer search over many top newspapers and magazines, and the ability to share content with your friends. Fast Flip also personalizes your experience by taking cues from selections you make to show you more content from sources, topics and journalists that you like.

Place Pages in Google Maps

Last week we launched Place Pages. A Place Page is a webpage for every place in the world — not just businesses, but also points of interest, transit stations, neighborhoods, landmarks and cities. Each Place Page organizes information about that a place, including a summary, reviews, photos and videos, related maps and much more — all in one page. To get to a Place Page, click "more info" in either the search results or the display bubble that pops up on the map.

Picasa 3.5, now with name tags

With Picasa 3.5, the newest version of our free photo editing software, you can organize your pictures by what matters most: the people in them. Using the same facial recognition technology that powers name tags in Picasa Web Albums, it identifies and groups similar faces so you can add name tags to dozens of pictures at once. Then, you can do creative things with your pictures, like quickly find all the photos with the same two people in them, make a face collage with just one click, or upload and share people albums with friends. Picasa 3.5 also has integrated Google Maps for faster geotagging, and there's a totally redesigned import process so you can import photos and upload them to Picasa Web Albums in one step. Picasa 3.5 is available in English for both PC and Mac.

New Features in Google SketchUp

We just released Google SketchUp 7.1 with a bunch of new features and functionality to make SketchUp even more useful for everyone. We overhauled our rendering engine to make it faster, built in a connection to Street View imagery in Google Maps, and added support for even more 3D file types. Plus, LayOut 2.1 (which is included in SketchUp Pro 7.1) now includes a simple but surprisingly powerful tool for creating dimensioned drawings from your models; especially helpful for architects, woodworkers and other designers.

Recently, you might have seen our mysterious series of Google "doodles" (our special homepage designs) in honor of H.G. Wells, the author and "father of science fiction." These are just three of the many doodles that decorate the Google homepage to commemorate notable individuals and discoveries, holidays and events in history. Occasionally, such as for our 11th birthday this month, a doodle graces the Google.com homepage worldwide. Other times, a doodle appears on a particular Google country domain. But you don't have to travel to see all the doodles there are — we archive them for your viewing pleasure. You can also subscribe to a feed to see new doodles whenever the archive is updated. Enjoy!

Project 10^100

As part of our 10th birthday celebration, we launched Project 10100 (that's "ten to the hundredth"), a call for ideas that could help as many people as possible, and a program to bring the best of those ideas to life. We're committing $10 million to implement these projects, and while money may offer a jump-start, it really comes down to the great ideas that we know are out there. We're accepting submissions until October 20, 2008, and then we'll open up voting in January.

Updates to Picasa, Picasa Web Albums

There's a new version available of our photo editing software. Picasa 3.0 makes it even easier to share photos with friends and family, thanks to a new web sync feature that automatically keeps your web albums up-to-date with the photos on your PC. Picasa 3 also includes intuitive new editing tools, like a powerful retouching brush, text tool, movie maker and revamped photo collages. We've also updated Picasa Web Albums with "name tags" to help you automatically organize and share your photos by who's in each picture.

Google Chrome

This month we released a new open-source web browser. Google Chrome is fast, secure and lets you access your favorite Google services, such as Gmail, Google Maps and Google Docs, more easily than ever. There are some unique features too, like a single box for web addresses and searches, a simplified download manager and an interface to maximize your browsing experience. (Windows-only at present.)

Google Maps for mobile with Street View

If you use Google Maps for mobile on your BlackBerry or Java-enabled phone, you can now access Street View while on the go. The new release incorporates Street View into business listings and directions -- you'll be able to see a specific location before you get there. Other
new features include business reviews and walking directions.

Transit on Google Maps for New York

New York City has about a third of the country's public transportation volume, and now Google Maps includes public transit information for the entire metro region, making this the biggest Transit launch for Google Maps to date. You can find Transit coverage for more than 70 cities and countries; we'll keep you posted as we add more to the mix.
