BLABBERMOUTH.NET - MAYHEM's Concert In Malaysia To Be Investigated By Authorities

BLABBERMOUTH.NET - MAYHEM's Concert In Malaysia To Be Investigated By Authorities:
Malaysian National News Agency Bernama has issued the following report:

A government backbencher Wednesday asked the government to probe into how the black metal MAYHEM music concert, said to be worshipping the devil, were allowed to hold a concert in Backroom, Kuala Lumpur on Feb 4, next year.

Datuk Idris Haron (BN-Tangga Batu) said the government should view the matter seriously as it seemed that drugs topped the agenda for the musical group from Norway, as depicted in the website:, which provided information on the group.

"The advertisements on the concert have been published in the local papers," he said during question time at the Dewan Rakyat sitting here today.

In reply to the question, Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Noh Omar said even though the authority to permit the group to enter the country does not fall under the ministry's jurisdiction, he would present the matter to the relevant authorities.

"It is not under our jurisdiction but the views on this matter, I will take note and bring it to the relevant authorities," he said.

Meanwhile, in replying to a question from Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) on the steps necessary to curb drug smuggling in the country, Noh said the government had implemented various law enforcement measures related to drug trafficking and abuse.

Noh said besides the hanging sentence, Malaysia also practised the arrest without trial in connection with drug trafficking offences.

This year alone, over 1,000 drug traffickers were arrested without trial while last year, about 2,700 were arrested for similar offences.

Flag of Hong Kong

The Flag of Hong Kong is red with a stylised, white, five-petal Bauhinia blakeana flower in the centre. The red colour on this regional flag is the same as that on the national flag. The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region flag was adopted on 16 February 1990, and received formal approval from the Preparatory Committee on 10 August 1996. The flag was first officially hoisted on 1 July 1997, in a historical ceremony marking the transfer of sovereignty of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom to the PRC. The precise use of the regional flag is regulated through laws passed by the 58th executive meeting of the State Council held in Beijing. The former colonial flag was used from 27 July 1959, to 30 June 1997, when Hong Kong was under British rule. It was a blue Union Jack ensign with the Hong Kong coat of arms on a white disk centred on the outer half of the flag.

Do you get nostalgic for the Black Sabbath and Iron Maiden days? Do you like your stoner rock a little prog, a little metal and a lot high-voltage?

Emerging from Austin, TX, these four Swordsmen (doh!) toured with ... And You Will Know Us By The Trail Of Dead and had SXSW 2004 in a right royal frenzy over their primal, hard rocking. The Sword's rampage continues as they prepare to unleash a nine song long player in February 2006 on NY's Kemado Records.

(Right-click, "Save Target/link As") - Four inmates on the run after jailbreak in Washington state - Four inmates on the run after jailbreak in Washington state - Nov 26, 2005:
YAKIMA, Washington (AP) -- Authorities searched Saturday for four maximum security inmates who escaped from a county jail by climbing down a rope made of bed sheets, authorities said.

The inmates escaped Friday with five other prisoners who were quickly recaptured before they could leave the jail grounds, said Will Paulakis, a Yakima County Corrections Department division chief.

The four escapees include a 20-year-old man scheduled to go on trial December 5 on charges of second-degree murder, another charged with burglary, and two who were being held on second-degree assault allegations.

The inmates apparently escaped shortly after 5 p.m. through the ceiling of a cell in their unit on the top floor of the four-story main jail, said Cpl. Ken Rink, a Corrections Department spokesman.

They gained access to the roof and used bed sheets to slide down to the roof of the adjacent one-story jail annex, then jumped to the ground. A similar approach was used in a 1994 jailbreak.

One inmate was recaptured on the main jail roof, three were caught on the annex roof and a corrections officer spotted the fifth standing on the ground and tackled him, Rink said.

No injuries were reported.

The jail is located near the old train station in downtown Yakima, in central Washington. Some streets were blocked off in the area after the 5:20 p.m. escape, and officers asked nearby businesses to be on alert.

The date (kurma/tamar) is a food of high nutritional value

Food Value
The date is a food of high nutritional value. It provides natural sugar in the form of glucose and fructose. This sugar is ready for immediate absorption and is, therefore, infinitely superior to cane-sugar. It is usually taken raw or with milk, which makes it highly nutritious in most respects. Taking it with curdled milk is also common. The seeds of the fruit, roasted and ground into powder makes a beverage like coffee, called 'date coffee'. The date palm yields a sweet juice of high food value. The juice can also be allowed to ferment and made into alcohol.

Natural Benefits and Curative Properties
Dates are valuable as medicine for their tonic effect. Being easily digested, they are very useful for supplying energy and repairing waste. Milk in which clean and fresh dates have been boiled is a very nourishing and restorative drink to children and adults alike, especially during convalescence.

Intestinal Disturbances
The nicotinic content in dates is an excellent remedy for intestinal disturbances. According to Metchnikoff, the great Russian Scientist, liberal use of dates keeps in check the growth of pathological organisms and helps to establish a colony of friendly bacteria in the intestines.

The date is a luxative food. It is highly beneficial in the treatment of constipation as the roughage provided by it stimulates sluggish bowels. They should be immersed in water at night and taken after making them into a fine syrup the next morning to secure luxative effect.

Dates are excellent remedy for alcoholic intoxication. In such cases, drinking water in which fresh dates have been rubbed or soaked will bring quick relief.

Weak Heart
Dates are an effective remedy for weak heart. Dates soaked overnight in water and crushed in the same water in the morning after removing the seeds should be taken at least twice a week in this condition. It will strengthen the heart.

Sexual Debility
Dates are highly beneficial in the treatment of sexual weakness. A handful of dates soaked in fresh goat's milk overnight should be ground in the same milk in the morning. A pinch of cardamom powder and honey should be mixed in this preparation. This becomes very useful tonic for improving sex stamina and sterility to to functional disorders.

Children's Diseases
A date tied to the wrist of the baby and allowed to be sucked by him during teething time hardens the gums and prevents other complaints like fretfulness and diarrhoea. A teaspoonful of paste of the date prepared with honey is an effective medicine for diarrhoea and dysentery during teething. It should be given three times a day.

Jaring clarifies ‘nationwide’ coverage claim

PETALING JAYA: Barely a month old, Jaring's new broadband Internet service is experiencing some hiccups, with potential customers claiming that the new service is not living up to their expectations.

Lee Yan Chun, 25, said his hopes of getting Jaring’s Internet broadband service were dashed when the company said there were no DSLAMs (Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer) in the area where he stays.

“This was the same excuse given to me by another broadband service provider last year,” the customer service representative told In.Tech in an e-mail.

Lee claimed Jaring misled the public when it said the company was offering a “blanket nationwide coverage,” when it only covered areas where incumbent telco, TM Bhd's DSLAM broadband ports were available.

In.Tech reported on Oct 27 that Jaring is now providing nationwide broadband Internet service.

Jaring chief executive officer Dr Mohamed Awang Lah was quoted as saying that with “the blanket nationwide broadband coverage, Jaring is fulfilling its role to provide broadband service to all Malaysians and increasing the rate of broadband penetration throughout Malaysia.”

When contacted, Mohamed said the word “nationwide” has to be taken in the context of the available telecommunications infrastructure in the country.

“It’s nationwide in the sense that the service is available in most parts of the country and not limited to particular areas,” he said.

He said Jaring had to depend on TM’s last mile DSLAM access to provide its broadband services in certain areas.

Mohamed said Jaring and other wired broadband Internet providers use TM’s “limited ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) infrastructure to offer its broadband service.”

He said that if Jaring were to roll out its own broadband service, it would take some time to attain complete nationwide broadband Internet coverage, and would require high capital investments.

“Wired telephone infrastructure – through which wired broadband services are carried – can only be provided via TM,” he said, adding that this is the current state of the country’s wired broadband services.

“Even the incumbent telco took a few decades to achieve its current level of nationwide coverage,” he added.

Mohamed claimed “there is no way for any other service provider to install new wired infrastructure and have an instantaneous rollout.”

He said Jaring is also working on another way to reach other potential Internet broadband users through its wireless broadband connection. This method, he said, would be independent of TM's infrastructure.

Jaring is working on this method in phases and some time is needed before it is available nationwide, Mohammed said.

Meanwhile, another Jaring customer, Michael Tan, claimed that he was charged differently from what was advertised by Jaring when he signed up for its Internet broadband package.

“I was charged RM295 for a modem that was supposed to be free and a monthly fee of RM90 when it was supposed to be RM79,” said Tan, who has been subscribing to Jaring for the last 10 years.

Mohamed said Jaring will investigate this complaint. “If this is proven to be true, Jaring will refund the affected customer,” he said. – JO TIMBUONG

Man Calls Mom After He Was Reported Dead - Yahoo! News

Man Calls Mom After He Was Reported Dead - Yahoo! News:
OAKLAND, Calif. - Anthony Sheppard shocked his mother this week with a telephone call, a day after he was reported dead. "When he called me I thought I was talking to a ghost," said Verna McCowan.

Oakland police on Tuesday bungled the identification of a man shot to death after finding Sheppard's identification card on the victim. Authorities alerted his mother of the shooting, and released the details to reporters.

Sheppard, 23, said he was shocked when he walked up to a group of friends on Wednesday who were crying while reading a newspaper account of his death.

The dead man was later determined to be Mark Martin, 26, of Oakland, who was identified by fingerprints. No suspects were arrested. Sheppard told authorities he had lost his identification card several years ago.

Alameda County Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Jim Knudsen said Thursday that police provided coroner's officials with the man's identification. No fingerprints were initially taken, and Sheppard's family was alerted.

"A day or two later, the mother calls and says, 'I just talked to my son,'" Knudsen said. "We're human and we feel sorry for what happened."

The soldiers are tired and lonely after spending weeks in enemy territory. To entertain them the Major called for this HOT number from the nearby town.

She came, danced and when the first dance was done, the soldiers went mad. They clapped for 5 minutes.

For her second number she stripped and danced in sheer bra and G-strings. This time the applause went for 10 minutes.

The next number she danced topless, and this time the applause went on and on. The Major had to come on stage and ask them to quiet down for the grand finale.

For her last number, she was to strip completely and dance naked. The Major expected the soldiers to make enough noise to bring the roof down. But ten minutes later, there is no clapping and the dancer comes backstage.

The Major asks her, "What happened? How come there was no clapping this time?"

She replied, "Major, how do you expect those poor boys to clap with one hand?!!?"

JAKARTA, Indonesia (AP) -- A masked terrorist has threatened attacks against the United States, Britain and Australia in a video found in the hide-out of one of Asia's most wanted militants.

"As long as you keep your troops in Iraq and Afghanistan and intimidate Muslim people, you will feel our intimidation," the man said in the video, made public late Wednesday and shown on Indonesian television.

"You will be the target of our next attack," he said, pointing his finger at the camera.

Police believe the man, who was wearing a black mask and spoke with a Malaysian accept, may be Noordin Mohamad Top, said to be a key leader of the al Qaeda-linked Southeast Asian terror group Jemaah Islamiyah.

The Malaysian fugitive is accused of playing key roles in at least four bombings in Indonesia, including the 2002 nightclub attacks on the resort island of Bali that killed 202 people, 88 of them Australians.

"Our enemy is America, Australia, England and Italy," the man said, later singling out Australian Prime Minister John Howard and Foreign Minister Alexander Downer.

"We especially remind Australia that you, Downer and Howard, are killing Australia, leading it into darkness and misfortune and mujahedeen terror," he said.

"Especially you," he said. "Remember that."

The video was found by Indonesian police last week in a series of raids that resulted in the death of Noordin's Malaysian colleague Azahari bin Husin, JI's master bombmaker.

'Prison Break' producer found dead at Drake Hotel

A producer for the Fox network television series "Prison Break," which is filmed in a former state prison in Joliet, was found dead in his North Michigan Avenue hotel room Monday afternoon, the victim of an apparent drug overdose, according to authorities.

Matthew Houbrick, 42, of Calabasas, Calif., was found dead about 3:30 p.m., in his 6th floor room at the Drake Hotel.

Some white powder, believed to be cocaine or heroin, was also found in the room, a source close to the investigation told the Chicago Sun-Times.

It was unclear how long Houbrick had been dead, but a police source said a Hollywood producer was concerned about the man and asked hotel staff to make a well-being check. Police officials obtained the information about his job title, but Fox network spokesmen did not confirm Houbrick's death late Monday.

Worked on '7th Heaven'

The drama "Prison Break," currently in its first season, tells the tale of a man who robs a bank in order to get caught. This allows him to be sent to the same prison where his older brother wrongly sits on Death Row for an assassination. The younger brother plans a breakout for the both of them.

The series is filmed at the former Joliet Correctional Center, where generations of hard-core criminals served time.

Houbrick's credits include working as supervising producer for the WB's "Charmed" from 1999 to 2000, as well as other production work on "7th Heaven," the 1990s' series "The Love Boat: The Next Wave" and "Pacific Palisades," according to the Internet Movie Database.

Mercora Hooks Into Google Talk - The Unofficial Google Weblog - "Google Talk?s open standard has been appropriated in an unexpected way: Mercora, the peer-to-peer collaborative streaming network, now offers a Google Talk on-ramp to the community. The main benefits seem to be a single sign in for both Google Talk IM and Mercora listening, and the ability to bulk-invite all of one?s Google Talk friends to Mercora participation. This is actually a pretty good way of easily setting up small listening-sharing groups, starting with the Google Talk invite system and extending seamlessly into Mercora."

Al-Qaeda tightens Its grip in Iraq

By Syed Saleem Shahzad, Bureau Chief, Pakistan Asia Times Online

The death of former Iraqi vice president Ezzat Ibrahim al-Douri marks a turning point in the Iraqi resistance. Command of the movement will now almost completely be in the hands of al-Qaeda, which will further cement its moves to fight a global war against America under a unified, open command.

Douri, 63, was one of Saddam Hussein's closest aides and the most senior figure in the former regime still at large - he was number six (king of clubs) in the US's pack of cards denoting its most wanted people. The US had offered a US$10 million reward for information leading to his capture.

He died after a long battle with leukemia, according to a statement from the Ba'ath Party - which the Americans have officially dissolved in Iraq. The statement continued: "After 50 years he spent in the militant struggle and in the resistance, Ezzat Ibrahim al-Douri quits his horse going to the mercy of the Almighty God."

Douri was a Sufi Muslim and a practicing sheikh (spiritual guide) of two major Sufi schools, Rafahi and Qadri. As a Ba'athist as well, he was a trusted comrade of Saddam.
Though Saddam disliked such practices. every Monday he would hold a congregation for his disciples at his residence in Tikrit, where they would recite Sufi rituals. At Friday prayers in Baghdad he would eloquently hold court in Sheikh Abdul Qadir Gillani's mosque. Saddam thought that his close comrade from Oaja village near Tikrit was setting the wrong precedents for the secular image of the Ba'ath Party.

However, Douri and his Sufi circle turned out to be a most useful tool when Iraq was invaded by US in 2003.

Douri was the one who established coordination between the Ba'ath Party, the Iraqi Republican Guards and local Islamic groups, not only in Fallujah and Baquba, but also in northern Iraq, especially in Kirkuk.

As many senior people around him were gradually arrested, including Saddam, Douri remained at large, mostly in northern Iraq, including the cities of Mosul, Tikrit, Samarra and Kirkuk. At one time he escaped to Syria, but returned.

One of his sons, Ahmed, became the main financial organizer of the resistance.
For a long time Douri was the acknowledged driver of the resistance, but in the past few months little was heard of him. The speculation in the resistance was that he had either died, or once again gone to Syria. His illness was well known - he traveled with a mobile medical unit that was able to change his blood wherever required.

Douri's absence over the past months coincides with the period in which Islamic groups prevailed over the Iraqi resistance and effectively took control. After Douri, there is no one of his stature or knowledge to lead the remnants of Saddam's era. They have little option but to stick with the command of the Islamic groups.

Al-Qaeda's grand plans

According to people familiar with al-Qaeda who spoke to Asia Times Online, al Qaeda, having acquired absolute control over the Iraqi resistance, aims to march towards its next targets.
These include the establishment of a unified command based in Iraq and Afghanistan; to shed its shadowy image and call for jihad and recruitments throughout the Muslim world; and then wage a global battle against America and its allies in the open, contrary to its present strategy under which al-Qaeda, its leadership and operations are underground.

For more than a year interaction between the Iraqi resistance and the Taliban-led Afghan resistance has been mutually beneficial. Asia Times Online has reported how Taliban commander Mehmood Haq Yar went to Iraq to learn the techniques of urban guerrilla warfare.

This interaction produced the following immediate benefits:

- Iraq has turned into a hub for the anti-US movement, with thousands of jihadis a year pouring in from all over, including Saudi Arabia, Syria, Jordan, Palestine and Lebanon. A fund-raising campaign to finance the Iraqi resistance is also in full swing in countries such as Yemen, Algeria, Jordan, Syria and Egypt.

- At present, the Iraqi resistance is feeding the Afghan resistance, but once the Afghan resistance gets up to a certain level, thousands of new pro-Taliban jihadis will be inspired - just as they were for the jihad against the Soviets in the 1980s - to join in the fight. Pakistan and the Central Asian republics are seen as prime recruitment grounds.

Iran and al-Qaeda

Zabul province in southeastern Afghanistan is the hub of the Afghan resistance, and where most of its resources are stored. It also has many heroin-processing laboratories. Though these belong to local warlords, the proceeds are shared with the Afghan resistance, which safeguards transit routes.

From Afghanistan, these routes enter Iran, with the drugs either destined for Turkey or Central Asian countries, notably Uzbekistan.

In Iran, the route passes through Iranian Balochistan, where al-Qaeda operators interact with local Sunni groups which facilitate the drugs going on the next stage of their journey, notably to Chabahar port in Iran.

These routes remain mostly unguarded, despite Iranian authorities being aware of them, according to US-led coalition authorities in Afghanistan, and no action has been taken against the Sunni groups.

In its grand strategy, al-Qaeda sees a similar corridor opening in Iran to act as a link between Iraq and Afghanistan, where it is envisaged the bases for al-Qaeda will be created.
Intelligence analysts suggest that since September 11, 2001 the level of cooperation between Iran and al-Qaeda has increased. However, the anti-Shi'ite stance of the al-Qaeda leader in Iraq, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, remains a major obstacle.

Should this be resolved, and Iran soften its attitude, al-Qaeda will have taken a major step towards launching its global war against America.

Felice Beato

Felice Beato was a British and Italian photographer. He was one of the first photographers to take pictures in East Asia and one of the first war photographers. He is also noted for his genre works, portraits, and views and panoramas of the architecture and landscapes of Asia and the Mediterranean region. Beato's travels to many lands gave him the opportunity to create powerful and lasting images of countries, people and events that were unfamiliar and remote to most people in Europe and North America. To this day his work provides the key images of such events as the Indian Rebellion of 1857 and the Second Opium War and his photographs represent the first substantial oeuvre of what came to be called photojournalism. He had a significant impact on other photographers, and Beato's influence in Japan, where he worked with and taught numerous other photographers and artists, was particularly deep and lasting.
