Indian woman locked in a room for 15 years by family:

New Delhi - Police in India's eastern state of West Bengal have rescued a 40-year-old-woman who was imprisoned by her husband and in-laws in a cramped room for 15 years because she did not get enough dowry, a newspaper reported Sunday. Police found Madhabi Das inside a room at her in-laws' residence in Baruipur district near the state capital Kolkata on Saturday, and said the woman had lost her sanity because of the long detention, the Times of India reported.

Investigators said the woman had spent her youth inside a small and dark room as her in-laws and husband started demanding a huge dowry soon after her marriage.

Police have meanwhile detained three members of her family including her mother-in-law and husband and sent Das to a mental asylum for treatment.

Dowry is exchanged in a majority of Indian weddings though its practice became illegal in 1961. According to a UN report, 70 per cent of married women in India face domestic violence and many of such cases are dowry-related.

Women are abused, beaten and even killed for not getting enough dowry. The government's National Crime Records Bureau reports that more than 18 women are killed for dowry in India every day.

China plans online marriage list to tackle bigamy:

BEIJING (Reuters) - Worried your husband-to-be is already married?

In China you will soon be able to check on a nationwide registry of marriage details, designed to stamp out bigamy, the official Xinhua agency reported late on Tuesday.

The system, recording the date, place and names of every marriage, should be up and running by 2010, Xinhua quoted the Civil Affairs Ministry as saying.

Simplified marriage procedures have led to a rise in bigamy in recent years, Xinhua said.

China is in the middle of a crackdown on official corruption, with those who take extra wives and mistresses being targeted.

KUALA TERENGGANU: Sungguh mengaibkan apabila 18 pelatih wanita sebuah institusi kemahiran di Selangor, dikatakan dipaksa menanggalkan pakaian kecuali coli serta seluar dalam oleh tenaga pengajar mereka.

Dalam keadaan separuh bogel itu, semua pelatih wanita berusia antara 18 hingga 24 tahun turut dipaksa berdiri dalam bengkel selama empat jam dari jam 8 pagi hingga 12 tengah hari, Jumaat lalu.

Bukan setakat itu, seorang pelatih dari Hulu Terengganu dekat sini, mendakwa mereka juga dimaki-hamun serta dipanggil anjing dan babi.

Dia yang tidak mahu namanya didedahkan, memberitahu Harian Metro, semua beg pelatih dikumpulkan di tengah bengkel manakala telefon bimbit mereka dirampas seorang daripada dua tenaga pengajar terbabit.

“Kami memang malu diperlakukan begitu. Walaupun cuba membantah, dua tenaga pengajar itu mengugut melakukan sesuatu yang lebih teruk jika kami berdegil.

“Kami terpaksa akur dengan perintah mereka sebelum menanggalkan pakaian dan terpaksa menebalkan muka apabila ada pelatih lelaki melintas depan kelas,” katanya ketika dihubungi, semalam.

Menurutnya, insiden memalukan itu bermula apabila pihak fakulti menerima maklumat ada seorang pelatih meninggalkan institut sehari sebelum itu dan tidak hadir kuliah.

Katanya, mereka tidak berpuas hati dengan tindakan yang diambil kerana sebahagian besarnya tidak bersalah dan sepatutnya tidak dibabitkan dalam hal itu.

“Ibu bapa kami menganggap tindakan itu keterlaluan sebelum ada yang membuat laporan di Balai Polis Kuala Kubu Baharu,” katanya yang tidak akan melupakan kejadian mengaibkan itu.

Sementara itu, Ketua Polis Daerah Kuala Kubu Baharu, Superintendan Hud Abd Rahman, ketika dihubungi semalam, mengesahkan beberapa laporan diterima membabitkan insiden terbabit.

Menurutnya, siasatan masih dijalankan dan sehingga kini, keterangan pelatih dan beberapa saksi lain dirakamkan bermula Sabtu lalu.

Mengulas kejadian terbabit, Ketua Fakulti Perkhidmatan Personal institut itu, Rubiah Kassim, berkata berlaku salah faham antara pengajar dan fakulti dalam menangani isu disiplin pelatih.

“Memang benar, majoriti pelatih mempunyai masalah disiplin seperti minum ubat batuk, arak, berpesta di asrama, tidak solat dan berlaku sumbang.

“Tetapi, arahan saya pada hari itu cuma hanya penolong saya merampas semua telefon bimbit kerana memang polisi tidak membenarkan pelatih membawa telefon ke kelas atau di bengkel,” katanya ketika dihubungi, semalam.

Rubiah berkata, tenaga pengajar terbabit tidak berniat memalukan pelatih, malah mereka memohon maaf kepada pelatih dan keluarga masing-masing.

Penolong Pengarah Institut Kemahiran Belia Negara (IKBN), Ahmad Zaki, pula berkata pihaknya akan menjalankan siasatan dalaman dan tindakan sewajarnya akan diambil selepas selesai siasatan.

BRUSSELS, Belgium — Two men hijacked a helicopter Sunday and forced the pilot to land in a prison courtyard, where they picked up an inmate in a dramatic jailbreak, the pilot told Belgian television.

The accomplices paid for a helicopter ride at an airstrip near the city of Sint-Truiden, about 40 miles east of Brussels, saying they were tourists from Marseilles in southern France, pilot Eric Mathieu told the RTL-TVI network.

After takeoff, they produced a pistol and hand-grenade, ordering Mathieu to fly to Lantin prison outside nearby Liege.

"They pointed a revolver at my forehead," Mathieu told RTBF television. "The prison yard was so small, at first I refused to land there, but they threatened to kill me, so I had to do it."

Mathieu said he touched down while about 200 prisoners were exercising in the yard. One climbed on board while his accomplices threw tear gas canisters into the crowd.

The helicopter then landed less than a half-mile from the prison, where the three men got in a waiting car and drove away, VRT television news said.

RTL-TVI identified the fugitive as a Frenchman who was in pretrial detention on charges of fraud and theft. RTBF said he had previously escaped from prisons in France and Spain.

TAIPEI, Taiwan (AP) — A zoo worker had his forearm reattached Thursday after his colleagues recovered the severed limb from the mouth of a 440-pound Nile crocodile, an official said.

The crocodile severed Chang Po-yu’s forearm on Wednesday at the Shaoshan Zoo in the southern city of Kaohsiung when the veterinarian tried to retrieve a tranquilizer dart from the reptile’s hide, zoo officials said.

The Liberty Times newspaper said Chang failed to notice the crocodile was not fully anesthetized when he stuck his arm through an iron rail to medicate it.

As Chang was rushed to the hospital on Wednesday, a zoo worker shot two bullets at the crocodile’s neck to retrieve the forearm, said Chen Po-tsun, a zoo official.

“The crocodile was unharmed as we didn’t find any bullet holes on its hide,” Chen said. “It probably was shocked and opened its mouth to let go of the limb.”

The 17-year-old reptile is one of a pair of Nile crocodiles kept by the Kaohsiung zoo. The crocodile is listed as an endangered species, and is rapidly disappearing from its native African habitat.

Chen said the zoo purchased the crocodile from a local resident who had kept it as a pet.
