NEW PRODUCTS & UPDATES

More personalization for your homepage

Make the Google homepage your own with the newest features for the Google Personalized Homepage. You can change the entire look of the page by choosing one of six themes. All the themes are dynamic, which means the look of your homepage will change depending on the season, time of day and weather conditions of your current location. If you can't decide which gadgets to add, you can review other users' ratings or read reviews of gadgets from the directory; name a new tab and let us select gadgets you might like based on the tab's name; or click a gadget's drop-down menu in the upper right-hand corner and select "You might also like..." to see our recommendations.

One we do recommend is the new Google Talk gadget, which lets you chat with friends and family directly from your homepage. And this gadget lets you view videos and photo albums straight from your chat window by pasting URLs from YouTube and Picasa Web Albums into your chats. There's nothing to download or install.

MISCELLANY

We admit it -- we get wrapped up in our work. Even when we're not feeling so great, there are deadlines to meet - things that can't move forward without us - and the fear of getting behind keeps us going even when we feel lousy. It's easy to see how it happens in this "always-on" culture, and so it's probably no different for you, either. Our own Google doctor at our Mountain View, Calif. headquarters, Dr. Taraneh Razavi, recently reminded us -- and you! -- to stay home when you're sick. As she notes in a recent Google Blog post, it's not just at Google that this working-while-sick phenomenon goes on, to the benefit of no one, least of all the lousy-feeling person and their immediate co-workers. So whether you've got flu-like symptoms, a bad cough, or a wearying head cold, consider this a reminder to nurse yourself back to health -- at home. Chances are you'll heal more quickly and your colleagues will thank you. There will always be another work deadline. Why not make one for yourself -- to get better?

"Strange Owl" seen in wild for first time

A tiny bird so rare and unusual that its scientific name means "strange owl" has been spotted for the first time in the wild, scientists announced yesterday.

Conservationists working in Peru got their first natural glimpse of the long-whiskered owlet last month while working in a private mountain reserve.

The species wasn't even known to exist until 1976, and since then the only known living specimens have been those caught in nets at night.

"Seeing the long-whiskered owlet is a huge thrill," said David Geale of AsociaciĆ³n Ecosistemas Andinos, who was part of the research team, in a press statement.

The American Bird Conservancy, which partnered in the research, described the sighting as "a holy grail" of bird biology.

As few as 250 of the owlets are thought to exist, scientists said, and the birds are as distinctive as they are rare.

With their diminutive size, bright orange eyes, and wild, wispy facial feathers, the dainty birds belong to their own genus, dubbed Xenoglaux, or "strange owl."

The owlets owe much of their survival to the remoteness of their dense mountain habitat, the researchers said. But as human activity encroaches on Peru's northern forests, the birds' future looks dimmer.

"Due to the rapid destruction of its forest habitat and its tiny range, it is inferred that the species is in serious decline," Geale said.

"Until recently, the owlets key habitat was completely unprotected."

U.S. man found innocent, freed after decade in prison

U.S. man found innocent, freed after decade in prison:
ST. LOUIS: After more than a decade in prison, a 41-year-old man was freed Thursday when a Missouri judge found he was not guilty of the carjacking for which he had been convicted.

Antonio Beaver was exonerated based on DNA analysis that was not available when the robbery was committed. Tests determined the blood at the crime scene was not Beaver's.

An hour after arriving in court wearing an orange prison jump suit, Beaver was wearing a sport coat and slacks, talking to reporters during his first moments of freedom.

"This feels strange," Beaver said. "I'd like to give my thanks to God, because there is a God and he knew I was innocent from the start."

Beaver filed his own motion for a post-conviction DNA test in 2001. He was later assisted by The Innocence Project, a New York-based legal center that seeks to uncover wrongful convictions.

St. Louis Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce, who filed a joint request seeking Beaver's release, choked back tears and told Beaver her office would help him re-enter society.

"I am personally very distressed to see a case such as this," said Joyce, promising to help Beaver seek compensation from the state under a new Missouri law that pays inmates exonerated of crimes.

Beaver could be paid up to $50 (€37.5) for each day he spent in prison, roughly $193,000 (€144,547) in all.

Beaver said the money could not replace all he has lost.

"I just about lost connection with my sons. They're grown now," he said. "I wanted to be a father to them, but I couldn't. That was took from me."

Beaver had been convicted of robbery in 1997 and sentenced to 18 years in prison.

During the carjacking, someone threatened a woman with a screwdriver. The woman stabbed the man with the screwdriver, leaving traces of his blood in the car. The victim later identified Beaver in a lineup, but his lawyers now say that lineup was flawed.

Joyce said authorities have identified a new suspect in the case. He already is incarcerated for another crime, but she would not give details.

Yahoo! Mail to offer unlimited space

Yahoo will begin offering unlimited storage for its free Web-based e-mail in May, the company announced late Tuesday. The move makes Yahoo the first of the major free e-mail providers to offer unlimited storage, but it likely will not be the last.

Yahoo currently offers 1 gigabyte for its free mail service and 2GB for its premium fee-based service. Google's free Gmail service offers more than 2.5GB of storage, and Windows Live Hotmail offers 2GB for free.
"We are watching the trend lines of how people are using e-mail...and they are sending more photos and videos and rich media," said John Kremer, vice president of Yahoo Mail.

Google began the storage wars in earnest when it launched Gmail in April 2004 with 1GB of storage. Yahoo Mail, which launched in 1997 with 4MB of storage, upgraded to 100MB of storage shortly after Google's Gmail announcement, bumped it up to 250MB in late 2004, and then up to 1GB in 2005.
With 250 million users, Yahoo Mail is the largest global e-mail provider and the largest in the U.S., according to comScore.
The unlimited storage will begin rolling out globally in May, and Yahoo expects to have all of its customers covered within a month, except for China and Japan. "We will continue working with these markets on their storage plans," Kremer said.

Dad says 2-year-old son shot him in arm

Dad says 2-year-old son shot him in arm:
MINNEAPOLIS - Minneapolis police are trying to find out how a 2-year-old boy allegedly ended up with a gun and shot his father. The 24-year-old man walked into Abbott Northwestern Hospital last Saturday with a gunshot wound to his arm. The man told police that his 2-year-old son had taken the gun from his mother's purse and fired it at him.

"I cannot think of the last time a 2-year-old was involved in a shooting," Lt. Amelia Huffman, a police spokeswoman, said Tuesday. "It's a pretty rare thing, thankfully."

Huffman said the 22-year-old mother was home but not in the room at the time. A 4-year-old child also was in the house, but there was no other witness to the shooting.

Police were investigating whether there was any child endangerment, since the 2-year-old apparently was able to reach a gun. No was arrested or charged.

The type of gun involved wasn't disclosed.

However, Joe Penaz, who teaches local gun safety classes at gun clubs and gun stores, said that it was possible for a small child to fire a gun if it was an automatic, which are as light as 7 ounces.

"Women seem to gravitate to small automatics," he said. Penaz said he carries an automatic that requires only 16 ounces of pressure on the trigger to fire.

Huffman said the incident underscores the importance of safety when a gun is in a household. "If you keep a firearm, keep it locked up," she said.

Hina wanita bertudung

Harian Metro Online (Malaysia):
KUALA LUMPUR: Mengaibkan!

Pemerhatian Harian Metro mendapati pengunjung begitu mudah mengaksesnya dan pelbagai gambar lucah membabitkan adegan seks berahi gadis Melayu bersama pasangan disajikan ketika pertama kali mengunjunginya, tanpa sekatan.

"Dead" Malaysian returns home after two years

"Dead" Malaysian returns home after two years - Yahoo! News:
KUALA LUMPUR (Reuters) - A man mistakenly certified as dead following a horrific motorcycle accident two years ago was reunited with his family last week after a social worker helped to identify him through thumbprints.

S Samy Pillai, 50, was believed to have been killed in a hit-and-run accident in June 2005, after his wrecked motorcycle was found along the same stretch of road as a body mangled beyond recognition, the Star newspaper said.

But he was found to be alive, although speechless and partly paralysed by the accident, after a social worker encountered him hobbling around on crutches about 300 km from his home and took him to authorities, who identified him from his thumbprints.

Last Tuesday, Pillai's wife, K Letchumy, 42, confirmed the man was her husband, but how he spent his years away from home is a mystery. The couple have 9 children, the paper said.

"I am glad Samy Pillai has been reunited with his family who had all this while thought the unidentified body had been his," the paper quoted Andrew Raju, the social worker, as saying.

"They even conducted prayers according to Christian rites."
