Airbourne - Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast

Airbourne - Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast

Some people like to make all the rules
And tell others what to do
They make it their way so they always win
And the others always lose
Street gangs and madmen
How they wage their private wars
In bankers clothes their hearts are froze and
Their wives hold hands with whores

I'll sit and spin for a little while
If it's the end of days
I'm goin out in style

Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna drink it up while it lasts
Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna tear it up so fill my glass

Thieves in the night rob you blind
With surgical precision
You can't evade the eye in the sky
He got facial recognition
Paranoia on every street
It's hard to stay alive
Never know when you'll feel the heat
Before it takes your life

I'll sit and spin for a little while
If it's the end of days
I'm goin out in style

Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna drink it up while it lasts
Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna tear it up so fill my glass

Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna drink it up while it lasts
Too much, Too young, Too fast
I'm gonna tear it up so fill my glass

Too much I'm gonna drink it up
Too fast yeah while it lasts

Google Maps for mobile, now with My Location (beta)

GPS-enabled mobile phones continue to rise in popularity - but most of us do not have that capability. Now, with the latest version of Google Maps for mobile, you can use the new My Location (beta) technology that uses normal cell phone towers to provide you with approximate location information. It's not GPS, but it comes pretty close.

+ Your online privacy +

At the end of August, we wrote here about a YouTube video we made that explains exactly how we handle personal computer information for every individual search query. Since then, we've produced some 15 other short videos -- tips you can use to manage your own information for Google products including Picasa for photos, Street View in Google Maps, Blogger, your Google Web History, and more. There's also an excellent year-end review on privacy protections across the Internet given by Peter Fleischer, our global privacy counsel. All of these are available on a new Google Privacy Channel on YouTube. We strongly believe that you will want to understand the issues surrounding privacy of information, and make your own choices based on that understanding. We hope you find these videos useful, and we'll continue to add new tips on video on this channel, so you may want to bookmark the page, or subscribe to its feed.

POWER TIP

Google Tip of the Day Gadget

Various updates to Google products are sometimes released at such a pace that even we Googlers have a hard time keeping up -- and some of the best aspects can be lost in the shuffle. The Google Tip of the Day gadget highlights some of the lesser-known or recently-added members of the Google family, with short, easily-digested descriptions and examples. We serve up a new tip every weekday and you can scroll through the archive to see earlier tips as well. Just add this gadget to your iGoogle homepage or embed it on your own website or blog.

NEW PRODUCTS & UPDATES

Updates to Google Notebook

This month we've unveiled a number of updates to Google Notebook, most notably a mobile version so you can access your notebooks from your cell phone or other handheld Internet device. In addition, we've also improved and simplified the interface, added labeling functionality for improved organization, and integrated Google bookmarks.

Google products optimized for the iPhone

Those already in possession of an iPhone will notice we've recently optimized Google search, Gmail, Calendar, Picasa, Reader, and Docs to work better than ever. The iPhone-optimized properties take advantage of the Safari browser to render touchpad-friendly pages along with the high processing power of the iPhone to offer a seamless browsing experience.

Updates to Google Maps

Over the past month Google Maps has made a number of improvements, including adding a Terrain overlay that displays physical features such as mountains, valleys, and forestation as well as elevation shading, river rapids, and hiking trails. By clicking the Terrain overlay for New York, for instance, you can see 3D models of buildings in Manhattan. There's also the new Editable Maps, to help correct data on Google Maps, such as the exact location of your house -- just like a wiki database.

Five new iGoogle themes

Those of you who use iGoogle now have five additional theme choices to personalize your homepages. These include: the solar system, showing a new scene for each day of the week; the Hong Kong skyline (it changes in light and texture based on time of day); a family of raccoons playing in a leaf pile; a tiger on Jeju Island, South Korea; and JR, the lovable monster who grapples with life in a city for which he is entirely too big.

+ Voters go online +

The 2004 presidential contest was the first major campaign that featured a notable amount of online activity - fundraising, blogging, petition-gathering. Since then, it's only heated up, as even more people are conducting their business, and spending their leisure time, online. During this run-up period to the 2008 election, YouTube has broken new ground by collaborating with CNN to organize major candidate debates for both parties featuring video questions submitted by thousands of voters. YouTube also launched a meta-election site called YouChoose, so that folks can track the candidates on the issues they care most about. The Internet is a powerful tool for sharing information quickly, presenting all sides of the issues, candidate positions, and much more. We are planning for a busy campaign season leading up to November 2008, and we encourage everyone to get informed and stay current as the candidates, the polls, and the issues continue to play out next year.

"I get by with a little help from my friends," as the song goes. It's always been true in the real world; these days the help of friends (some you know, many you don't) makes online experiences all the more powerful. Open source software, Wikipedia, movie, music, book, or travel recommendations from others -- all "get by" with input and participation from lots of people. One very real-world application of this kind of collaboration we're particularly excited about is the ability to "mash up," or integrate different open software tools, to create something new. Google Maps has really benefited from this approach, because people are able to add local annotations and even up- to-the-minute details. In October the value of this particular "mashup" became very apparent when many people put together details of the various Southern California fires. To be able to see evacuation routes, new danger zones, emergency housing sites, means a real lifeline in time of need. We're grateful that people are able to make use of these tools when it really counts.

Embed Google Maps on your website or blog

There's a new feature on Google Maps that enables you to easily embed an interactive map on your website or blog just by copying and pasting a snippet of HTML (much in the same way as embeddable YouTube videos work). On Google Maps, pull up the map you want to embed-- it can be a location, a business, a set of driving directions, search results, or a map you've created. Then copy the embed code by clicking "Link to this page," and paste the code into your blog or website. You can create a map using the map-making tools in the My Maps tab and display it on your website using this embed feature.

NEW PRODUCTS & UPDATES

Updates to Google Earth

With the new Google Earth (4.2), you can see a view of the night sky and explore the universe from home. Browse, zoom and click on the sky the same way you can with the Earth. Thanks to partners such as the Hubble Space Telescope, you'll see beautiful imagery of space and the objects in it, together with lots of additional data including constellations, the moon, planets, a user's guide to galaxies, and the life of a star. There are also updates to Google Earth layers, including new overlays. A Book Search layer includes placemarks of location names mentioned in books that are available in Google Book Search; a Traffic layer overlays live-traffic data for major cities that are already published in Maps. We've also included high- resolution photos from across the U.S., placed so that they line up with the terrain, letting you see the "real deal" superimposed on 3D imagery.

A free office productivity suite for creating documents, spreadsheets, and presentations on the desktop, StarOffice, is now optional software within the Google Pack. And by using the Open Document Format, StarOffice is fully compatible with Google Docs & Spreadsheets so you can easily upload and share your work.

Paid storage for Gmail and Picasa Web Albums

U.S.-based English-language users of Gmail and Picasa Web Albums can now purchase additional storage to be shared across these products. We want you to be able to live more of your life in "the cloud" -- where your data is available to you any time, from any PC. Eventually, we hope you can have one place to store you information - in whatever form - online. We've integrated this extra storage across Picasa Web Albums and Gmail for now, and plan to add more Google services soon.

Web History now includes Google Book Search

MISCELLANY

As our lives move increasingly online, we all tend to take for granted the convenience of having websites know our shipping address, our preferred email format, the movies or music we're likely to enjoy, and of course our credit card or bank account numbers. Many news stories about what's called "online privacy" have delved into the implications of businesses (like ours) holding all of this personal information for you and every consumer. We encourage you to study the privacy policies of every company you do business with online, including us. Look for clearly-written explanations and reasonable terms. We're trying to go further than current industry standards, too, by being as transparent as we can possibly be in telling you about what data we keep, how long we keep it, and so on. If you're interested in these matters, you may enjoy the first video we've made to explain basic privacy concepts in an easy-to-watch 5 minute format. (We plan to produce more on this topic in the future). We hope you learn something and also let us know what you think.

Something we've learned from YouTube is that interesting and compelling video content can come from all kinds of people, from professionals to students to parents and families. And because great videos also come in all languages, YouTube is now available in 9 countries: Brazil, France, Ireland, Italy, Japan, the Netherlands, Poland, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Users visiting the YouTube site from these regions will experience a fully translated and localized site, including videos in their own languages, video ratings, sharing, and content flagging. Google Developer Day

On May 31st, we held the first Google Developer Day around the world. More than 5,000 software developers gathered in San Jose, London, Paris, Madrid, Hamburg, Moscow, Beijing, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, and Sydney. These software pros use Google products to build websites and programs for consumers and businesses -- such as software applications that sync Google Calendar and other calendar programs, or real estate sites that display listings on top of Google Maps. In addition to free food, these software engineers spent the day leading technical sessions on how to build great products using Google services.

+Is green the new black?+

It seems you can hardly turn around lately without getting some news about climate change, sustainability, and environmentalism in general. If you want to get involved, there are countless programs, products and efforts you can undertake as an individual, from recycling or biking to work to buying a hybrid car or low-flow toilet. And there are plenty of things businesses can do too. As a global employer, Google is engaged with several initiatives. These include:

- solar power: we recently completed what may currently be the largest corporate solar installation in the U.S. at our Mountain View, California campus. With this in place, we hope to offset about 30% of our peak-hour output.

- corporate commuting: we manage a fleet of shuttle buses that carry some 1,500 Googlers to and from work all around the San Francisco Bay area, with additional benefits and credits for those who carpool, take the train, bike, or have a hybrid vehicle.

- plug-in hybrids: we're supporting research for this promising vehicle technology that may double the mileage of today's hybrid cars.

- carbon neutrality: we've pledged to become carbon neutral as a company - around the world - by the end of 2007. You can read more about all of these programs and more on our new "green" site.
