Colorful Harlequin Frog Discovered
PHOTO IN THE NEWS: Colorful Harlequin Frog Discovered:

March 12, 2008—With such flashy looks, this aptly named harlequin frog seems like it would be easy to spot.Link
But scientists hadn't seen one of its kind for 14 years, until it was "rediscovered" last month in the mountain forests of Colombia.
The rare find—technically known as a Carrikeri harlequin frog—is some welcome good news for South America's amphibian species, which have been disappearing at an alarming rate, experts say.

Six-legged frog is star attraction
A Chinese restaurant has found a six-legged frog - and is keeping it to attract diners.
The frog is on display in a glass tank at the restaurant in Quanzhou city, reports People's Daily.
"I bought more than 5 kilos of frogs from the market the other day, and upon coming back found that one of them has six legs," says chef Xiao Song.
The frog has two extra legs on the front left side which, according to waiters, means that it has a lopsided hop.
Experts at the local forestry department say the extra legs were most likely caused by genetic mutation. Link

Purple fluorescent frog dicovered
A purple fluorescent frog of the genus Atelopus was discovered during a follow-up survey of the Nassau plateau in mid 2006 by Surinamese scientists Paul Ouboter and Jan Mol. The frog is one of 24 new species found in the South American highlands of Suriname, conservationists reported on June 4, 2007, warning that these creatures are threatened by illegal gold mining.
