Penang launches statewide free WiFi project

Penang launches statewide free WiFi project:

"GEORGE TOWN: Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng has launched “Penang Free WiFi” - the first step in making Penang the country’s first WiFi state.

The initiative, which is the first component of the state’s Wireless@Penang project, is aimed at giving Penangites free wireless broadband services.

“Today, Penang takes a bold step to make the entire state connected through wireless broadband and it’s a journey we want to complete within the next 18 to 24 months.

“This effort is 100% private sector driven with nearly no or minimal cost put in by the state government. However, there are no rights to exclusivity and all qualified and recognised industry players are welcome to interest of promoting competition,” Lim said at the launch in Komtar on Thursday.

He said the project was different from the Federal Government-initiated High Speed Broadband (HSBB) project costing RM11.3bil.

Lim said a preview of WiMAX@Penang, the state’s next step in providing for serious mobile Internet users who require faster speed, was scheduled for next week.

The Penang Free WiFi project is currently headed by content manager REDtone Telecommunications Sdn Bhd and service enabler Hotgate Technology (M) Sdn Bhd which will set up 750 wireless access points over the next one year.

He said the free WiFi service was already available on Komtar’s concourse level and 28th floor which houses the Chief Minister’s office.

“The WiFi service will be deployed on a ‘ripples strategy’ with simultaneous initial roll-outs in several core market centres on the island and mainland before they spread to cover the entire state,” Lim said.

REDtone group managing director Wei Chuan Beng said they would begin setting up access points in Queensbay Mall and the service should be available within the next four weeks.

“This will be followed by the areas located in Macalister Road, Burma Road, Gurney Plaza and Gurney Drive, Bukit Jambul Complex, Universiti Sains Malaysia, Butterworth and then Tanjung Bungah.

“The connection speed offered is at an average of 10 Mbps, depending on the specification of the notebooks, the speed can vary,” Wei said.

He said the REDtone-Hotgate consortium planned to invest at least RM10mil in the project but expected it to be self-funded from advertisements in the near future."

KUALA TERENGGANU: The Crystal Mosque at the Islamic Civilisation Park in Pulau Wan Man here is to have wireless broadband access.

The mosque made of crystal shine glass and steel foundation is also equipped with the latest ICT facilities where sermons could be aired via the Internet.

Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh said the mosque is an icon, not only for Malaysia but also at a global level.

The mosque is part of the RM250mil Islamic Civilisation Park situated on a 23 ha site and is under the East Coast Economic Region (ECER).

Idris said the park has attracted a steady flow of visitors since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi opened it on Feb 3.

"The park saw an arrival of 700,000 visitors in six days since its opening where the spillover affect from the enormous crowd, vastly benefited the local business fraternity and food operators," he said.

Kerajaan tarik balik spektrum 2.5, 3.5 GHz

PETALING JAYA 19 Nov. – Kerajaan akan menarik balik spektrum 2.5 dan 3.5 gigahertz (GHz), yang pada mulanya diberikan kepada syarikat-syarikat telekomunikasi secara percubaan, kata Menteri Tenaga, Air dan Komunikasi, Datuk Seri Dr. Lim Keng Yaik hari ini.

Beliau berkata, ini adalah berikutan keputusan kerajaan dua bulan lepas untuk memberikan tumpuan kepada akses keupayaan saling mengendali bagi gelombang mikro seluruh dunia (WiMax), generasi ketiga (3G) dan jalur lebar gentian ke rumah berkelajuan tinggi sebagai platform untuk mempertingkatkan perkembangan jalur lebar di negara ini.

"Saya sudahpun mengarahkan Suruhanjaya Komunikasi dan Multimedia (MCMC) untuk memberikan notis kepada syarikat-syarikat telekomunikasi membubarkan perniagaan itu.

"Perkhidmatan tanpa pelanggan akan ditarik balik serta merta manakala yang mempunyai pelanggan akan diberikan tempoh lima tahun untuk membubarkan perniagaan di bawah peraturan MCMC," katanya kepada pemberita selepas merasmikan Simposium Antarabangsa mengenai Teknologi Maklumat dan Komunikasi 2007 anjuran Universiti Multimedia di sini hari ini.

Dr. Lim berkata, MCMC telah mengeluarkan spektrum 2.5 GHz bagi jalur lebar tanpa wayar manakala spektrum 3.5 GHz adalah bagi frekuensi pautan ke bawah satelit.

Beliau berkata, spektrum 2.5 telah ditarik balik kerana kebanyakan syarikat yang diberikan frekuensi itu belum melancarkan perkhidmatan masing-masing manakala spektrum 3.5 GHz terpaksa ditarik balik kerana ia mengganggu satelit.

Spektrum 2.3 GHz telah diberikan kepada YTL E-Solutions Bhd, Packet One Networks (M) Sdn Bhd, Asiaspace Dotcom Sdn Bhd (bagi Semenanjung Malaysia) dan REDtone-CNX Broadband Sdn Bhd (Sabah dan Sarawak) selepas proses bidaan.

Tujuh syarikat yang diberikan akses kepada spektrum 3.5GHz adalah sama ada di bawah lesen atau secara percubaan. Syarikat-syarikat itu ialah Airzed Broadband Sdn. Bhd., AtlasONE Sdn. Bhd., TT dotCom Sdn. Bhd., Maxis Broadband Sdn. Bhd., Telekom Malaysia Bhd. (TM), NasionCom Sdn. Bhd. dan eB Technologies (M) Sdn. Bhd.

Syarikat-syarikat yang diberikan akses kepada spektrum 2.5 GHZ ialah Airzed Broadband, AtlasONE, Jaring Communications Sdn. Bhd. Maxis Broadband, TM, TT dotCom dan eB Technologies.

Dr. Lim berkata, dengan penarikan balik spektrum 2.5 dan 3.5 GHz itu, bilangan pengendali WiMax dikurangkan, sejajar dengan dasar kerajaan untuk mengagihkan setiap spektrum itu kepada pengendali yang berlainan.

"Jika ada terlalu banyak pengendali, mereka akan 'bunuh' satu sama lain dan (akhirnya) tiada siapapun akan melancarkan jalur lebar," tegasnya.
